Gestational Diabetes
A condition which occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy
when the pancreas produces insulin but doesn't lower the mother's
blood sugar levels. Gestational Diabetes affects 4-5 % of all
pregnant women in the U.S. - around 135,000 cases each year.
Glitazones (pioglitazone hydrochloride)
The newest class of diabetes medications called the
thiazolidinediones, which work by decreasing insulin resistance
and increasing insulin sensitivity. Favorable effects on lipid
levels (blood fats) in Type 2 Diabetes have been seen. Examples
include Actos and Avandia.
Glucophage (metformin)
An oral medication that lowers blood glucose (sugar) by
inhibiting production and absorption of glucose in the liver and
intestine and promoting insulin sensitivity through peripheral
uptake of glucose; used for treating Type 2 Diabetes.
Glucose
One of the most important carbohydrates, blood glucose (sugar)
passes through the cell wall via insulin receptor sites to be
converted into energy for the body.
Granulosa cells
A layer of cells capable of releasing estrogen and forming the
wall of an ovarian follicle.
Gylcemic Index (GI)
The glycemic index is a ranking of carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose (sugar) levels. It compares foods gram for gram of carbohydrate. The GI acts a dietary guide, with carbohydrates that break down quickly and cause a fast glucose response having the highest glycemic ratings. Carbohydrates that break down slowly, releasing glucose gradually into the blood stream, have low glycemic ratings.
